Writers of Turkish grammar sources, in general, do not pay regard to a criterion whilst naming and classifying them, or they do not suggest an explication of the criterion on the basis of which they name and classify them. For instance, philologists such as Tahsin Banguoğlu, Kaya Bilgegil, Muharrem Ergin, Vecihe Hatiboğlu, Rasim Şimşek, Leyla Karahan, Günay Karaağaç, İbrahim Delice, Jean Deny, Kononov have mentioned determinative phrases and types of them in their books. On the other hand, Haydar Ediskun, Hikmet Dizdaroğlu, and Tahir Nejat Gencan have not touched upon determinative phrases in any parts of their books. There are some common points and similarities in the naming and classification of the philologists giving information about determinative phrases. However, in the books of the philologists except for Günay Karaağaç and İbrahim Delice, the criterion used to classify the determinative phrases has not been mentioned. We, as the first to say, find it useful to group the types of the Turkish determinative phrases “on the basis of the lexical types they function in expression”. Those are “noun phrase, adjective phrase, adverbial phrase, verb phrase and exclamation phrase”. Second, determinative phrases should be classified on the basis of their “structural properties”.
