Abstract

Duelling (single combat) is a peculiar tradition to the Western cultur which has a root to the antique periods. In spite of the fact that it is a tradition in which had been performed some Germanic tribes, duelling seriously changed in time. Considering the duelling-like practices that seen in the Antiquity, it is seen that that was a compensation to pay by the guilty. Besides, duelling-like practices of the Antiquity had adopted appaling violence much more than the Middle Ages did. In this respect, along with seeing in lots of country through the centuries, it has found its institutionalism in Europe. The essences of this institutionalism is owed to knighthood as a tradition that emerged in the Middle Ages. Knighthood was adopted gradually and became an institution, instead of being a tradition. And also the customs of this institution could have a place in the society easily. However, neither knighthood as an institution and nor its customs did not contain the layer of people. For, this institution was addressing to the upper part of the society; it was containing the noble people, some warriors and their successors. On the other hand, duel-like encounters and combats seen in the Eastern countries as well. In the Ottoman documents, there are certain impressive informations about duels both among non-muslims and Turks or between a non-muslim and a Turk. In this sense, here, a general and theoretical framework that attached to the duelling tradition in some Western countries will be drawn; some duelling encounters taken place in the Ottoman country shall be examined by the witness of archive documents.
