REPRESENTATION AND DISTRIBUTION OF RELIGIONS IN THE INTERNET MILIEU

Abstract

With the emergence and the prolification of the internet, similar to all other institutions and organizations, religious traditions have made its presence seen in this communicative environment. As a consequence of this circumstance first Christianity, Judaism, Islam and almost all religious traditions have begun to be represented in the internet milieu. The purpose of this article is to reveal to what extent religions are represented and how they are distributed in this new communicative environment. The level representation and distribution of religions in the internet will be revealed with search engines, indexes arranging web sites in accordance with categories and different research findings. While web sources that the data has been obtained is being determined, idiosyncracy of the internet has been taken into consideration. In this sense, English being the most widely-used language in terms of both the numbers of web pages and the users of internet language as English has played significant role in the usage of internet sources that the data has been gained. At the end of the study, it has been seen that religions have crucial representation rate in internet milieu. It was observed that the representation rates of religions which have more members particularly in Asia, Africa and Far East are low compared with the high representation ratios of religious traditions which are widespread and active in West. Factors such as level of education, lack of technical infrastructure, censorship, financial possibility are influential as a result. Besides, results of the study have also shown that both the representation ratios of the religions in internet milieu and the amount of the religious content have risen day by day.
