PROHIBITION AGAINST THE DEPICTION IN ISLAM AND ART OF MINIATURE

Abstract

Prohibition of illustration is in the centre of the opinions that are alleged about the constitution of Islamic art. In accordance with this point of view the religion of Islam prohibits the realistic illustrations, offers the abstract forms. According to the investigators who accepted the idea concerned; the art of miniatur was respected by the Islamic world because of this prohibition. On the other hand there is no provision about the prohibition of illustration in Quran. The findings that supports the concerned opinion are the applications of Hz. Muhammed who were against the illustration in the early times of Islam. But these findings were mostly against the idols and they were limited with the early times of Islam. Afterwards, an attitude was developed against the idols. However, there was not any serious application concerned with the prohibition of the illustrations except the aim of worshipping. On the other hand, the format that is found in the samples of the miniature art is neither a product of Islamic opinion nor it complies with the principles that is offered by the prohibition defensives. The development of the Islamic miniature art is a product of different cultures that formed the Islamic civizilation. As it is understood, the art of miniature is neither a religious art nor it is improved because of the religion. For this reason, when the development phases of miniature art is investigated the unreligious effects must be taken into consideration. In the article the emerge and the results of the prohibition of illustration is discussed and the source of Islamic miniature art is considered according to the prohibition of illustration and unreligious factors.
