Abstract

Etudes, have great importance at all the phaces of violin education. Apel (1969) described the etudes as the compositions which aim to develop the mechanical and thecnical abilities of a student on a music instrument; an etude usually put amphasis over a certain problem of an instrumental thecnic like scale, arpej, octave, trill etc. While performing an etude, the notes that follow eachother effects the intonation, speed, usages of intervals and positions. Markov chain models, shows the state of an element or elements in a process which includes sequental movements. It defines the the past, current and future states of an element in a sequental chain or the relationship between the elements (Ames, 1989: 175). The aims of this study, to help the students to learn the etudes in a short time by defining the intervals between sequental notes and advising pre-studies for the etudes according to the results of the study; to set an example study for similar etudes and compositions and make contribution to the violin learning process. In this study, 42 etudes which takes place in Rudolf Kreutzer’s “42 Etüden oder Capricen für Violine” method is examined by using the Double Chain Markov Model to define the movements of the sequental notes. The total range of the etudes in Kreutzer’s method, the usage frequency of the notes, the transitions between the sequental notes and the intervals of these transitions are defined and shown an the tables and graphics; according to the results of the study pre-studies which can be helpful for the etudes are adviced.
