Abstract

Uzbek Turks have a rich written and oral literary tradition. Their proverbs form an essential part of this tradition. We explore 114 Uzbek proverbs, most of them are chosen from O’zbek Xalq Maqollari (OXM), published in Uzbekstan, regarding their sentence structure in our article. The Uzbek proverbs are classified according to their sentence structure: 1. simple, 2. complex: a. coordinated, b. proverbs presenting a subordinated sentence structure having infinitive verb forms such as infinitives, participials or gerundial forms, c. conditional, d. proverbs presenting complex sentence structures with a direct quote and 3. proverbs having a mixed sentence structure. Simple sentences (1-15) are classified according to their meaning as: declarative sentences and imperative sentences.
