Abstract

In this study secondary school students' anxiety levels during the writing process is investigated in terms of gender and grade variables. The study is in survey model. Data is gathered with random sampling from four hundred and one secondary school attending students in the city centre of Diyarbakır. The Writing Anxiety Scale which consists of nineteen items developed by Yaman (2010) is used for collecting data. According to the findings of the scale secondary school students’ writing anxiety level in Diyarbakır city is in between nearby the low level and also the writing anxiety for the girl students is lower than the boy ones. The two findings of the study share similarities with the findings of the other studies on the same subject. Apart from this the writing anxiety of the last year students and the seventh graders being in between nearby the low level meaningful relation is found between them. The anxiety level of the last year students is relatively higher than the sevent graders. This different result from other studies is thought to orient from the fact that the last grade students concentrate heavily on solving tests to prepare for Placement Test that the eight grade students will have. According to findings of the study the anxiety is not bad all the time; anxiety at a certain level may motivate students for writing. In addition it would be more helpful if teachers organize writing activities considering the interests of the male and female students and integrating writing education with other linguistic skills. It is suggested that further research shuld be done on writing anxiety of students across Turkey.
