Abstract

Kyrgyz language, a Turkic language of Kipchak group, formed its writing system at the end of the first quarter of XX century. Prior to the October Revolution [24 October 1917] Kyrgyz people used the Chagatai script. In the first years after the revolution, education in schools was given in Kazakh and Tatar languages. But in 1923, first textbooks in Kyrgyz language were written, and Kyrgyz language started to be used as an official language. Using the Kyrgyz language as an official language created the need for different types of dictionaries, as well as orthograpic dictionaries. Among them, bilingual dictionaries are the most widely used. A lot of work over dictionaries has been done so far, however it doesn’t seem to be sufficient. The importance of performing such researches in Kyrgyzstan is quite obvious. Kyrgyz dictionaries created between the period from the October Revolution to the present day are reviewed in this paper. Dictionaries are given the following classification: orthographic dictionaries, bilingual and multilingual dictionaries, glossaries, dialectological dictionaries, etymological dictionaries, encyclopedic dictionaries, phraseological dictionaries, reverse dictionaries, dictionaries of synonyms, dictionaries of antonyms, dictionaries of homonyms, dictionaries of private names, dictionaries of geographic names, grammar dictionaries, dictionaries of ethnonyms, dictionaries of borrowed words and terminological dictionaries. In this work, bilingual and monolingual dictionaries were reviewed together with orthographic ones. Other dictionaries entered into classification will be analyzed in the following work.
