Abstract

The present study aimed at examining elementary school teachers’ attitudes towards the Internet and their Internet use with respect to certain variables. For this purpose, a scale for determining the participants’ Internet attitudes, their Internet use and demographic information about them was used as a data collection tool in the study. The document developed as the data collection tool was applied to 252 teachers (156 of whom were male and 96 of whom were female) from schools in the central city of Diyarbakir in Southeast of Turkey. The analysis of the data obtained revealed no statistically significant difference between the Internet attitudes of the teachers experienced in Internet use and those of the teachers inexperienced in Internet use (p>.05). The fact that the teachers who were at the beginning of their teaching profession had lower levels of Internet attitudes than those of the experienced teachers the former used the Internet more was considered as an important issue to be investigated in detail. In addition, it was seen that only a few participating teachers benefited from the facilities provided by the Internet (shopping, banking transactions and so on). Also, it was revealed that of all the teachers, 8,33% of them did not ever use the Internet.
