Abstract

Education is one of the keystones for a nation to be able to exist and keep pace with the changes. For this mission to be able to be actualized, the systemizing of the education according to the requirements of the time is vitally important. The lecture method which is a pretty old one, is one of those frequently referenced by the teachers. However, for a meaningful learning to take place and for a learning environment meeting the requirements of the time to be able to be arranged, the lecture method is not sufficient enough. For this reason, in the learning environment, the usage of documentaries which aim to reach the audiences to a critical conclusion and inform them through thought-provoking, is very important. As they include audio-visual components, the documentaries appeal to the students of different types of intelligences. So, this study aims to identify the effects of documentary-supported teaching on the level of the seventh grade students’ achievement in learning the topics of Social Studies. The research was realized on the seventh grade students of an elementary school in the city center related to Muğla National Education Directorate, in the first semester of the academic term, 2012-2013. Totally 66 students participated in this study. The experimental group was composed of 32 students and the control group was composed of 34. An academic achievement test consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions composed of 4 options, was used for the research. The application process was limited to 4 weeks. As a result of the research, the students of the experimental group exposed to the documentary-supported teaching have indicated significant difference than the control group. According to the data obtained as a result of the study, it was determined that the students of the experimental group were more successful.
