Abstract

The purpose of this research was exam to coherence of visual dimension and content in 4. and 5. grade social field text books in first level of elementary school in Turkey. The sub-problems of research are coherence of unit-subject heading, subject heading-text central theme, subject heading-visual element and text central theme- visual element. Survey research model was used as research method. The universe of research is social field text books which are using in first level of elementary schools 2007-2008 periods. Sample of research is constituted of total 7 social field text books of first level of elementary school. These are 4. grade text book of Turkish Language, Social Studies, Religion Culture and Ethics, Traffic safety and 5. grade text book of Turkish Language, Social Studies, Religion Culture and Ethics. Data was collected by tables which consist text book unit and subject and ranked “not at all, seldom, average, much and completely.” Research results are given below: Coherence of visual dimension and content in 4. and 5. grades social field text books in first level of elementary school is partly adequate. Coherence of unit-subject heading of 4. and 5. grades social field text books in first level of elementary school is highly adequate. Coherence of subject heading-text central theme of 4. and 5. grades social field text books in first level of elementary school is highly adequate. Coherence of subject heading-visual dimension of 4. and 5. grades social field text books in first level of elementary school is average level. Coherence of text central theme -visual dimension of 4. and 5. grades social field text books in first level of elementary school is lower level.
