Abstract

Letters to a German Friend has the characteristics of an open letter for symbolic values of the French. In letters, europeannes consciousness is told upon the French in all. The philosophy of the author in these letters is not only pon patriotism but also includes the sense of justice. In this work, bycomparing two types of personality of a nation trying to master the world with the discourse of master race during the years of the second world war and another nation trying to preserve its independence, the question how must be a real citizenship and wich things should be included by social morality properties are scrutinized. This work shows how can a normal person can change when it comes to motherland and for an honorable life, how can he take the risk of everytthing including death. It gives the sense of a person’s taking the responsibility or evading the responsibility may change under circunstances by exemplifying from his life. It is observed that the basis of the present day European Union are tried to be composed by authors like Camus. It is possible to see that Camus, a rare person who never makes a choice without thinking on it for a long time and when he makes a choice sticks to it in his life, acts according to this word. In this work of his, he handles basic humanitarian feelings like mercy, weakness, goodness, evil, hatred, sympathy smoothly. It demonstrates that ‘Hangman’ and ‘victim’ dilemma which are two sides of a humanbeing take out of a human’s life philosophy and that time and extension conditions force humanbeing to choose one of these two concepts. It tells his friend that the French could not be organized as they were cought unprepared for the war and were invaded, however with a conscious recovery, everything could be reversed.
