Abstract

Purpose; The aim of this study is to present the types of problems experienced by a child or children in foster home care as well as the methods they use in coping with these problems. Method,The universe of the study is composed of 20 Foster Parents located in Sivas (18 of the foster parents live in the center of Sivas, while the remaining two live Gemerek and Gurun districts). Each foster parent was asked a total of 34 open and close-ended questions about their socioeconomic and cultural characteristics. The data obtained were analyzed through the cross-tabular analysis among the descriptive statistics. Analysis was carried out on the SPSS package software. Results,The participating foster parents were asked whether they experienced any problems in the family with the child or children placed under their foster home care and this question was responded as “no” by 70.0% of the participants, while 30.0% responded as “yes”. Foster parents, who responded as “yes” were asked to explain these problems and 25.0% mentioned the reason as failing to obey the rules at home. Respectively, 5.0% stated that the problem was failing to get along well or competing with the other children at home, while 15.0% talked about acting ignorantly as well as being indifferent to everything, and 10.0% indicated that the problems occurred because the second child was handicapped, did not study and did not get along with the children of the relatives. The question on the methods used in coping with these problems were responded by 85.0% of the foster parents that they sat down together and talked about these problems, while 15.0% responded that there was no problem.
