Abstract

In this study, considering the theories and concepts of sociolinguistics ,female’s and male’s usage of written language differences were negotiated and examined in a corpus. When these differences are being considered, Difference Theory forms the point of view that doesn’t see linguistic variations lacking from one another and defends that every sociolect has its specific and free system. In sociolect, gender related conversational styles are called as genderlect. This study’s corpus related with the genderlect consists of summative texts which are written by university students after a short film. After the analysis of corpus it was seen that females made more sentences compared to males. On the other hand although males aren’t as proficient as the females while making sentences of good quality they surpassed females numerically in the point of making complex sentence. In the previous studies related with the females and males language it was put forward by different statistics that females paid more importance to communication, empathy and being understood correctly. In all this study it was observed that females used elliptic sentences and approval expressions in accordance with these qualities more than males do. In addition to these expected findings like the usage of everyday language and qualifiers taking more place in female language and their making less grammatical mistakes were also observed. But besides these findings, the high rate of abstract word usage in male language brought out a different result from previous ones. In short, in this study findings that match or contradict with previous studies to do with male and female language were seen and afterwards explonatory analyses were done related with these findings.
