Abstract

Depending on the written sources such as compilations, reviews and researches about the local dialect of Ordu city, especially on Turkiye’de Halk Agzindan Derleme Sozlugu, this study focuses on the structure, meaning and etymology of idiomatic phrases in order to identify and collect idioms that make an important portion of the vocabulary of the local dialect of Ordu city. Idioms in the local dialect of Ordu usually consist of possessive construction, adjective clause, gerunds, participles, repetition phrases, prepositional phrases, compound verbs and abbreviation phrases, and the excessiveness of word groups consisting of gerunds and compound verbs attracts the attention. Very few of idioms consist of malediction/curse words. They are generally derived from the word “baba (father)”. Such as baba cıkasica, baba tutasica, baba tutmaz, babalar ala, karababaya tutulmak.
