Abstract

The annual heating and cooling costs of Samsun province which is located in the Central Black Sea Division of Black Sea Region, has tried to put forward with this study. Heating and cooling degree days method is used and climatic season durations are determined in this study. Optimal temperatures for human life is based on, and it was applied to the daily temperature data of meteorology in this method. Revealed values were performed with interpolation techniques, and these data was mapped. Local conditions are primarily factors for heating and cooling degree days. The heating degree-day levels are higher and the cooling degree-day levels are lower on the areas that have high altitudes and continentality characteristics on the study area. Thus, three different zones are identified in Samsun Province according to heating and cooling degree-days. The heating degree-days totals are calculated as 1700-1800 °C/year on the seashore counties, 1800-1999 °C/year on Kavak and Asarcık counties, and 1900-2000 °C/year on the inland depressions which have high altitudes and harsh continental conditions. In contrast, the cooling degree-days amounts are calculated as 250-350 °C/year on the inland depressions due to high altitudes, and 450-550 °C/year on the seashore due to high humidity. Generally, winter conditions are dominant for 169 days and summer conditions take 122 days as seasonal durations in Samsun Province. In addition to this, heating is necessary for 243 days and cooling is necessary for 122 days. Therefore, the calculations resulted approximately as the yearly costs of heating and cooling are 2000 TL and 150 TL respectively.
