Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the primary 7th and 8th grade science and technology course students’ level of scientific literacy. In addition, it explores whether there is significiant difference among results according to students’ demographic characteristics (gender, parents’ education situation, their families’ monthly incomes, situation of having modern instruments and room of themselves, reading scientific journal, social environment of school). For this purpose, Scientific Literacy Scale and Scientific Content Test are prepared and applied by researcher. According to the results of the reliablity analysis, cronbach alpha value is 0,81 for Scientific Literacy Scale and 0,76 for Scientific Content Test. Data were collected from 1484 students who attended the 7th and 8th grade in 21 primary schools in İzmit, center of Kocaeli, during the school year of 2007-2008. In analysing data; aritmetic means, standart deviation, t-test and variation analysis were used to determine students’ level of scientific literacy. In addition, correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between level of scientific literacy and science achievement. This investigation show that students’ level of scientific literacy is sufficient, there is a significient difference among students’ level of scientific literacy according to gender, parents’ education situation, families’ monthly incomes, situation of having modern instruments and room of themselves, reading scientific journal, social environment of school.
