Abstract

Truth is an important concept for all people. We consider it as a law that explains everything. However when it is a matter of human life, there are many truths rather than a single truth. This is because while the consciousness of human is shaped by its own experiences, on the other hand it carries traces in the tradition that it finds itself. The human contact with the world and its way to understand reflects on the relation as a subjective interpretation. This is a signature that the human signs in the World. Despite this modern World is centred around an understanding of truth which is based on scientific reasoning and objective. Thus, understandable values are replaced with measurable values. Yet, to understand and to be understood is an existential need in the finite world of human. The human who is isolated through getting away from his own awareness and collective consciousness, needs a hermeneutic reflection in order to build this relation again. Therefore the way of thinking based on a single truth must be abandoned for being open to understand. While Gadamer emphasites the importance of prejudice and tradition in understanding he claims that the truth is not constant. Rather the truth is something that appears at the moment of speech. Interpretation starts when the understanding starts. Personel horizon, while shaped by the tradition we live in, also determines our interpretation. The act of understanding is, at the same time, experiencing the other. While there is an agreement even in misunderstanding, the subjectivity of interpretation is not an obstacle to the understanding. Each personal horizon must be open to different horizons. Hermeneutic reflection requires this. The solution to the alienation and conflicts resides here. Consequently, for Gadamer, hermeneutics hereafter is a practice than can be applied to every area.
