Abstract

Irregular measures are commonly used rhytmic structures in Traditional Turkish Folk Music. These measures reflect the general characteristic feature of Turkish Folk Music. They basically appear as 5/8, 7/8 and 9/8 variations. Starting from this basic structure, 10/8, 11/8 like, as irregular measure accessible to other complex structures. After the foundation of Turkish Republic, as in all fields, radical changes and reforms were also started in the field of music education. Many experiences has been gained from the contribution of the first generation of composers and music educators to music education. Then, the second generation of music educators have initiated studies based on the traditional elements in accordance with environment to the universe, and close to far principles in music education. While adaptation and arrange songs were used in music education previously, later songs that are depended on the resources of traditional folk music were began to produced. In this study, reflection of irregular structure of measures to school songs is researched. Therefore, in order to define to what extend the use of odd meter songs and ballads is reflected on school music as an education and repertory material, the songs in music course books used in “music courses” were analysed. For this reason, whether the rates of using odd meter school songs and ballads have changed until today was examined by choosing one of the books used in music education in every decade since 1950s. As a result of this research, some findings on which odd meters have been used how often were reached; and some suggestions on the use of songs and ballads containing odd meter were put forward.
