Abstract

Cities of Baghdad and Basra have been exposed to a number of invasions throughout history due to their strategic, economic and geopolitical positions. They had fallen under the domination of the Ottoman Empire as a result of the Treaty of Amasya signed in 1555 after the Irakeyn Expedition during the Reign of Kanuni. Baghdad and Basra castles that were built for obviating such dangers and defending the cities had transformed into structures also performing financial and administrative functions with new attachments in the course of time. This study embraces the reparation and reconstruction activities being carried out on Baghdad and Basra castles. It mentions not only the regulations made for the state administration that was tried to be reestablished after taking hold of these cities, but also the actions of administrators concerning the reparation and reconstruction of the aforementioned castles. In this respect, the study involves the determination of localities in need of reparation in the castles, feasibility studies that show the type and sum of necessary materials and how the required money had been supplied.
