Abstract

Today when technological devices such as mobile phones and tablets enter our lives more and more and we spend an enormous amount of time with them, we are experiencing a significant transition from written sources to audiovisual ones. The circulation of these audiovisual sources between countries and cultures is through translation. Film translation, which is an important type of audiovisual source, is generally done in two forms, dubbing or subtitling. Films are watched by people not only in the country they are made, but also around the world by a large audience in other countries through marketing. When we consider that translation is not only a interlingual transfer but also an intercultural transfer, we can imagine that great difficulties await the translator due to the cultural differences between societies. Situations in which extralinguistic cultural elements do not have the same or similar equivalents in the target culture are very challenging ones for translators. That’s why translators need to be bicultural as well as bilingual. Because of the space and time constraints that exist in subtitling, subtitle translator does not have the chance of writing footnotes or give explanations unlike the literary translator. In such challenging situations translators have to develop different strategies. In this paper, since our topic is the rendering of extralinguistic cultural elements in subtitling, we will use Pedersen's strategies, who develop a model for rendering extralinguistic cultural elements. Pedersen's strategies follow a path, which he called Venuti scale, from foreignization to domestication. And because some strategies are not translations in the sense of translation that we know, we use the term rendering instead of translation in accordance with Pedersen.
