Abstract

In many works carried out to date, archaic and archaism terms are confronted with some different definitions. In the studies on the Turkic Languages, eskicil and eskicillik terms are generally preferred instead of foreign origin archaic and archaism terms. When we deal with Turkic languages, we can see that Chuvash possesses a special place with the protection of the oldest structures as in Halach, Turkmen and Yakut. With this feature, Chuvash provides us a lot of information about the reconstruction of Turkic and Altaic languages from the phonetic, morphologic and syntactic aspects. In the light of these informations, we frequently benefit from Chuvash for the reconstruction of the Proto-Turkic, Pre-Turkic and and Proto-Altaic forms. Chuvash also has common features with the Altaic and Fin-Ugoric languages apart from Turkic languages. Chuvashs’ place in the Turkish languages was determined by long discussions. Chuvash is the first language to separated from the Turkic languages and therefore it has many traces belonging to the earliest periods. With this feature, Chuvash guides us to solve some historical problems of Turkic languages. When we look at all of the Turkic languages, we can see that some of the features that we can accept as archaic, are preserved only in Chuvash. In this study, archaism and archaic terms are emphasized by giving examples of how Chuvash preserved the old features which are not preserved in other Turkic languages. Also in this study, it was mentioned that how archaism has been handled in works done so far and archaism term was defined on two different contexts and exemplified on Chuvash
