Abstract

Kösedere Village of Ayvacık Town in Çanakkale province is primarily known for agricultural practices. In the surface survey conducted by A. O. Uysal in 2010 and the author of the present paper participated in, various material culture assets from the Ottoman Period were obtained. These are a mosque with an adjacent hammam, an inscription in the front , a fountain, an elementary school building, houses, and a historical cemetery. In the surface survey, the measured surveys of the mosque, hammam, and fountain were carried out. In this paper, the architectural works except for the elementary school, houses, and cemetery were described. The mosque dated to the first half of the 19th century has a wooden roof, a wooden pillar on the western façade, and a portico with a baghdadi arch. Its minaret has been renovated. The wooden ceiling, qibla wall, and mihrab decorations in the prayer hall are representative of the 19th century style. The ruined hammam on the western side of the mosque is small in size. It was built in 1845 AD by decree of Kösedereli Mehmed Agha. The dressing section and boiler room have collapsed. Only the square cold (frigidarium) and hot room (caldarium) and water reservoir have survived intact till the present time. The hammam exhibits a plan style observable in pavilions and mansions as of the Seljukian Period. The inscription installed on the coffin rest in front of the mosque was found to originate from the Kösedere Bridge. The bridge built by order of İzzet Agha between 1852 and 1853 AD collapsed in the 20th century. Only its abutment remains are visible. The fountain identified in Kösedere Village is a monument without an inscription. The style of the two-façade fountain is in compliance with that of the 18th and 19th century. The fountain examined in 2010 has been recently devastated.
