Abstract

Racial segregation has an important place in US history. Many attempts have been made to remove segregation in the United States between whites and blacks. In a case known as Brown v. Board of Education, the US Supreme Court banned racial segregation in schools in the United States in 1954. After that, the people in the Southern United States who believed in the supremacy of whites reacted against the Supreme Court decision. It was not easy to remove racial segregation in the southern states because racial segregation was the way of life in the South. It was not only about school segregation; one could see racial segregation in every part of southern life. In the southern states, organizations were established in which governors and political leaders took the lead, and these organizations struggled to ensure that the Supreme Court’s decision was not enforced in their territories. In the two southern states of the US, Mississippi and Virginia, where racial segregation has been intensively experienced, some measures were taken to maintain the “white supremacy”. Two statesaccused the Supreme Court of violating their States’ rights, and they tried to prevent implementation of the decision in the South. Two states chose to close public schools rather than integrate them. State-supported tuition grants was provided for white students who went to private schools. This study examines the reaction of these two states to Brown decision and makes an analysis of this important event in US history.
