STUDENTS’, TEACHERS’ AND PARENTS’ VIEWS ABOUT THE FUNCTIONALITY OF ART CENTERS IN PRESCHOOL CLASSES

Abstract

Art is a way to reveal a person’s creativity, emotions and thoughts by using imaginations. The significance of art and art activities cannot be denied at preschool age for development of creativity sense of children. Children activity products are presented at art centers. The aim of this study is to determine students’, teachers’ and parents’ views about the functionality of art centers in preschool classes. In this study, qualitative research design was used. In this study, the data were obtained through interviews with students, teachers and parents. The datas obtained through study were analyzed by descriptive analysis method. The study group consisted of students who enrolled at preschool education institutions from two different socioeconomic environment, their teachers and parents. Extreme or deviant case sampling was used in the study. Volunteer preschool teacher candidates participated to the study. Volunteer students, teachers and parents participated to the study. Study results revealed that preschool students like picturing, cut&paste activities, and painting activities mostly at art centers. On the other hand, it is determined that teachers emphasised some in adequacies at art centers in their classes. It is concluded that these in adequacies are due to lack of materials and place. Moreover, it is determined that art centers have many contributions to children, and these centers are very effective to develop imagination, and esthetics sense, skill in different fields, and to express themselves. It is determined that parents within the scope of study emphasized their children became happy and developed a positive friendship relation thanks to activities at art centers.
