Abstract

Following the annexation of the Kingdom of Pergamon to Rome, a new power emerged to dominate Anatolia. Rome, initially pursued a policy of liberating Greek cities in accordance toold Hellenistic tradition. Later giving up this policy however, she administered the “Provincia Asia”, i.e. Province of Asia meaningly Anatolia, in a regime that was dominated by Roman administrative system and culture. In Anatolia Kingdom of Pontus challenged Roma generals most. But including Pontus, Kappadokia, Armenia and Greek or native all temple states of southern, western and northern Anatolia submitted to Rome. Chaotic situation in Anatolia which was resulted from Galatian king Amyntas’ death in 25 B.C. was settled by Roman initiative and Kingdom of Galatia became of Anatolia started in full capacity. Struggles between famous Roman generals and their armies ended only in Augustus’time. Being sanctioned by the Senate, Augustus not only established a new dynasty but he was also sanctified and deified because of the peace that he consolidated throughout the empire. This imperial cult which was institued during the reign of Augustus was introduced to Anatolia as a result of Roman domination. Thus in antiquity especially for provincial cities title of “neokoros” in other words privilege of possessing imperial cult became an important figure for cities. In this matter the city of Magnesia on the Meander forms a special example. City, by using coins, announced that she was helding the honour of Artemis Neokoros, i.e. temple wander of Artemis Leucophryene
