Among the literary types based on narration, folk tales come after epics in terms of reflecting the worldview and imaginations of the public. Folk tales are among the literary types drawing the profound interest of primarily, western researchers, and Turkish scholars. It is accepted that to make a new definiton for folk tale is necessary since we believe that there is a lack of detailed definition on this genre despite of the fact that a plenty of studies exist on folk tales. As known well, among the great scholars of their time, Pertev Naili Boratav, Şükrü Elçin, Fikret Türkmen presented their valuable opinions about the definition of the genre of folk stories to the use of researchers. The definitions and works of these prominent scholars have had an important role in the development of the genre of folk stories and served the function of guidance for other researchers. The purpose of the present study is to come up with the definition of the genre of folk stories coveting all the features of the genre in light of the discussions presented about the definition and classification of this genre by these precious scholars. A definition, that includes genre's characteristics of creation and translation, content and function, form and structure, is made in this study. The types of the folk tale on the identification of species and general characteristics of the type of work done previously tried to make light of this definition is open to criticism. Possible criticisms can be directed towards whether the opinion described as definition and lying the basis of the present study is definition or description. The present study also seeks answer to this question. In our opinion, this method that used in definition can also be applied in defining other types of folk literature.
