Abstract

The goal of this study is to determine the views of teacher candidates studying at Education Faculties, Classroom Teaching Departments on the use of music at primary education for educational purposes. For this aim, interviews were held with totally 30 teacher candidates studying at Kayseri Erciyes University, Education Faculty, Primary education Classroom Teaching Department and Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University, Education Faculty, Primary education Classroom Teaching Department. Data of the research was obtained from the answers of interview questions made of open-ended questions that are determined by researchers and standardized. Data obtained from the interview were analyzed with content analysis method which is one of the qualitative research techniques. Data of the research were analyzed repetitively in different times. Items that were obtained as a result of the analysis were digitized and interpreted. According to the results of the research, almost all of the teacher candidates stated that music can be used apart from music classes for educational purposes. Teacher candidates also mentioned that using music in classes can ease classroom management and teaching classes through music or accompanied with music can provide benefits for learning in terms of perception, permanence, and motivation. On the other hand, teacher candidates emphasized that music types that will be used for educational purposes should be chosen carefully according to the development of students and they summarized criterion by making comparisons according to their personal perceptions.
