INVESTIGATION OF PRIMARY 4 TH AND 5 TH GRADE STUDENTS' ATTITUDES AND PERCEPTION TOWARDS ENVIRONMENT ACCORDING TO SEVERAL VARIABLES

Abstract

Environment and environmental education terms have been getting importance since 1995. Increasing of industry, production and consumption practices day by day has caused running out of environmental sources or damaging them so that in order to be able to use available resources efficiently, environmental education has been focused. In the process of achieving environmental education aims, attitude and perception are rather important factors. There are many variable effecting attitude and perception. The leading ones are gender, knowledge level, socioeconomic status and literacy level of students’ parents. From that perspective, main aim of this study is to examine primary 4 th and 5 th grade students' attitudes and perception towards environment in accordance with gender, class level, literacy level of students’ parents and economic level of students’ parents. The fact that the survey is focused on students educated in 4th and 5th classes is important to determine negative attitude and perception and to prevent them. Study group of the survey was 343 students educated in 4th and 5th classes in 5 elementary schools in Kırıkkale. They were selected randomly. Survey model was employed in that study and the instruments were Environmental Attitude and Perception scale. According to findings, students’ attitude and perception toward environment are generally positive, and attitude and perception towards environment differ in class levels, gender and education level of students’ fathers, but they do not differ in economic status and education level of students’ mothers. With the help of the findings, in order to develop students’ attitude, the followings can be advised: curriculum should be revised, students should be directed and advised to participate in activities related to environment and lastly parent training programs should be given importance.
