INVESTIGATION OF SOCIAL PROBLEM SOLVING OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS TERM OF SOCIAL SELF EFFICACY

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine whether or not university students’ levels of social problem-solving differs according to the variable of to social efficacy. The target population of the study which was carried in accordance with the general scanning model was undergraduate students who studied at Selcuk University in 2009-2010 academic year. The sample of the study is consisted of 849 students including 493 female students (58,1%) and 356 male students (41,9%) . Data were collected from Social Problem Solving Scale (D’Zurilla ve Nezu ,1990; Maydeu-Olivares and D’Zurilla, 1996) translated and adapted by (Dora, 2003) and Social Self Efficacy Scale (Smith and Betz, 2000; translated and adapted, Palancı, 2004). The Social Problem Solving Inventory consists of five subscales, namely: Positive Problem Orientation (PPO), Negative Problem Orientation (NPO), Rational Problem Solving (RPS), Impulsivity-Carelesness Style (ICS) and Avoidance (AS) Style. In order to analyze data, Pearson Corelation Coefficient and Simple Regression Analysis. As a result of research; it has been detected that there is a positive correlation between the points of social self-efficacy scale and points of positive problem orientation and rational problem solving, whereas there is a negative correlation between the points of negative problem orientation, impulsive careless attitude and avoidant attitude. Also, it was found that social self-efficacy points can be used to predict subscale points of other social problem solving inventories except impulsive careless attitude.
