PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ CONCEPTUAL METAPHORS ABOUT COLOR

Abstract

Human life is an environment surrounded with colors. This siege is very strong. Therefore, the colors are converted to an unquestioned habit. Life is based on this sense. However, colors effects all our decisions from birth to death. This research’s aim is to reveal the students perceptions who attend 4th grade in Amasya University Faculty of Education about colors with the help of metaphors. Phenomenologic method was used in the study. A total of a hundred sixty students from Education Faculty of Amasya University who proceed 4th grade participated in the study. Participants completed the prompt “Color is like ..... because …..” by focusing on one metaphor. According to the results, 122 personal metaphors and 6 conceptual categories, based on the participants’ metaphorical images, were identified. For the color of red, 24 metaphors have been produced by 60 students. For the color of orange, 21 metaphors have been produced by 30 students. For the color of yellow, 19 metaphors have been produced by 48 students. For the color of purple, 35 metaphors have been produced by 42 students. For the color of blue 15 metaphors have been produced by 53 students.And finally for the color of green 18 metaphors have been found by 51 students. If we look at the final outcomes of this study; we can say that in the progress of education, the color of orange should be used in the architectural structure of schools and the school materials. Also orange should be supported by the color of blue and green. In addition to that, the color of purple and red must be used very carefully. At the correct use of these colors, they can be very effective.
