Abstract

Social cognitive learning theory posits that people basically learn through observing others. A vast amount of information about human values, styles of thinking, and behaviour patterns is gained from the extensive modelling in the symbolic environment of the mass media. Media representations are also symbolic models which audience members observe, imitate and identify with. One of the most important ways the symbolic models influence the social learning process is their involvement in the shaping of identity. Codes and symbols relayed through the media representations embed themselves in the collective mind and influence on the identification of the audience.
