FORGIVING TRAIT AND SELF-COMPASSION ON PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS

Abstract

In this study, investigation of the relationship between forgiving traits and self-compassion of prospective teachers was aimed. Besides, the effects of gender, field of education, state of general happiness and state of having psychological problem were investigated. The universe was consisted of all prospective teachers attending to Faculty of Buca Education in Dokuz Eylul University during 2012-2013 academic year. The sample of research was consisted of 269 female and 131 male, totally 400 prospective teachers. Data was collected by Heartland Forgiveness Scale, Self-Compassion Scale, and a questionnaire. Data was analyzed by using SPSS 20 programme with parametric techniques as, Pearson correlation, independent sample t-test and one way ANOVA. According to results, there was statistically significant positive relationship between forgiving traits and self-compassion of prospective teachers. Besides there were statistically significant positive relationships among all subscales of forgiveness scale (forgiveness of self, others and situation) and self-kindness, common humanity and mindfulness subscales of self-compassion scale and there were statistically significant negative relationships among all subscales of forgiveness and self-judgment, isolation and over-identification subscales of self-compassion scale. It was found that, there was no statistically significant difference between forgiving traits and self-compassion of prospective teachers according to gender. There were statistically significant differences between forgiving traits and self-compassion of prospective teachers according to field of education. Moreover, it was seen that the prospective teachers who had high forgiving trait and self-compassion had also high level of happiness and they didn’t have any psychological problems.
