DETERMINING THE KNOWLEDGE AND THE OPINIONS ABOUT THE GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS (GMO) OF PRE-SERVICE SCIENCE TEACHERS

Abstract

With changes occuring in biotechnology there is a new word called “GMO” in our lives. Issues related to this concept start classes at elemantary level with science lessons. Because of this reason science teachers’ knowledge and perceptions has an importance. The aim of this research is to determine the level of knowledge and opinions of pre-service science teachers about GMOs. The survey method was used at this research. 180 pre-service science teacher studying Eskişehir Osmangazi University were chosen considering their class levels by stratified sampling method. The data was collected with 3-point Likert type scale which has 24 items and analyzed with SPSS 18.00 program. Frequency analysis was used to determine GMO knowledge and opinions, independent sample t-test was used to determine difference between gender and ANOVA analysis was used to determine difference between families’ level of income and level of class. At the and of the research almost of the candidates has a negative attitude towards GMO’s and they are harmful. Although the candidates know the meaning of the concept of GMO; they have a wrong information about the production of GM crops, the use of state of our country, their effects. Results indicated that the knowledge of teacher candidates has significant difference in 19 items of the scale according to their genders. Also the knowledge and opinions of teacher candidates about GMOs has significant difference according to their levels of class and but not their families' level of income.
