Abstract

The aim of this study was investigate validity and reliability of Turkish version of the Transformative Power of Suffering Scale. A total number of 283 college students (217 female students, 66 male students) participated in this study. The mean age for participants was 22.84 (S = 4.88). The participants completed The Short Psychological Resilience Scale and Life Satisfaction Scale in addition to Transformative Power of Suffering Scale. Item-analysis, validity and reliability analyses were conducted after linguistic validity study. For validity testing, confirmatory factor analysis was run and also the correlations among Transformative Power of Suffering Scale, The Short Psychological Resilience Scale and Life Satisfaction Scale were calculated. Analyses showed that the original structure of the Transformative Power of Suffering Scale was replicated in this study and the scale had good validity. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that model fit was acceptable (x²/sd = 2.522, CFI = .990, NNFI = .984, GFI = .985, AGFI = .945, IFI = .990, RFI = .959, RMR = .072, RMSEA = .073). For reliability testing, Cronbach alpha internal consistency coefficient and test-retest reliability correlation were performed. It’s calculated that the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of Transformative Power of Suffering Scale was .84 and test-retest reliability correlation coefficient was .75. Finally, this study revealed that Transformative Power of Suffering Scale had good validity and reliability to measure Turkish college students’ beliefs about transformative power of suffering.
