RELATION BETWEEN SOCIAL PROBLEM SKILLS OF MOTHERS AND SOCIAL SKILLS OF CHILDREN

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the relation between the social skill scores of the children in the age group of 5-6 years. The research was done by descriptive survey model and included 148 mothers and children. The data collection toolsthat wereused in the research was the Social Problem Solving Inventory which was developed by D’Zurilla and Nezu (1990) in order to measure the social problem solution skills of people and adapted to Turkish by Duyan and Gelbal (2008) and the Social Skill Development System Family Form which was revised by Gresham and Elliot (2008) and adapted to Turkish by Neslitürk and Deniz (2014). The study used the SPSS 20.00 for the statistical analysis of data. One-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) was used to examine whether the social problem solving skills of mothers and social skill scores of children vary on the basis of education levels and professions of mothers. The results of the study showed that the social skill scores of children didn’t have significant difference according to the education levels and professions of mothers. While social problem solving skills of mothers varied on the basis of education levels, there wasn’t any significant difference between the professions and social problem skills of mothers. Problem orientation and problem solving skills of mothers predict the scores of children for self-explanation, communication, joint action with group. Problem orientation and problem solving skills of mothers predict don’t predict the scores of children for cooperation, empathy and self-control. Problem orientation skills of mothers predict the responsibility scores while their problem solving skills don’t predict the responsibility scores.
