Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate science student teachers’ perceptions about the concept of global warming through metaphor analysis who study at Fırat University Primary Teaching Department. This is a descriptive study since it aims to display existing situation. The study’s datas were gathered through a form which included phrase like “the global warming is similar……, because…..” The data has been collected, analysed and commented by using quantitative and qualitative research methods. Sample of the study consists of 187 science teacher candidates who were studying 1, 2, 3 and 4. grade in Fırat University, at the Department of Science Teacher during 2015-2016 academic years. Regarding the participant, teachers candidates produced 144 different metaphors about global warming concept. According to these metaphors, “global warming” perceptions of the teacher candidates were grouped under different categories. The metaphors were devoloped that most were respectively “human”, “canser”, “dead” and “stove” regarding the concept of global warming by prospective teachers. Furthermore, the metaphors which were regarding the concept of global warming concentrated at the “for the degradation of the natural balance” and ‘‘deeds in rutern ’’ categories. In order to determine whether the metaphors developed by student teachers’ differ according to various variables, suitable statistical methods were used to analyse.Then the results of the categories were interpreted.Research results in line is given proposals such as similar studies carried out at the primary and secondary school with the students from different departments of the university won a holistic perspective.
