INVESTIGATION OF PRESERVICE MUSIC TEACHERS` SPECIAL FIELD COMPETENCIES

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine differentiation status of preservice music teachers’ sensations of special field competencies in aspects of gender, CGPA (Cumulative General Point Average) and university variables. The study is a descriptive research designed as a general screening model. The study population comprised 4th grade preservice music teachers from the education departments of Turkey in 2013-2014 academic year. The sample of the study consists of 216 students in total from randomly selected 7 districts of Turkey and from Education Departments as a representative for each district. To determine music preservice teachers' specific field competency perception, a 34-item competencies under the title of "Music Preservice Teachers’ Specific Field Competencies" prepared by the Ministry of National Education was adapted by the researcher within 5-likert type through expert opinions and by abiding the original. SPSS 20 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) packaged software was used for data analysis. For establishing which tests would be used for data analysis, normality assumptions were checked. In the wake of the researches regarding distribution normality; it has been deduced that normality assumption was not met. Non-parametric tests were used for data analysis accordingly. In the light of the obtained results; it is determined that preservice music teachers’ sensations related to special field competencies is eminent. Every phrase in the questionnaire values above 3.90 average. While there is not any significant difference suggested among preservice teachers in terms of gender and CGPA variables, a significant difference has been suggested in aspect of university variable.
