Abstract

Cotton, as an industrial crop, maintained its importance throughout history. it also kept its economic value for the producer countries. During the Ottoman Empire, Western Anatolia had an important place regarding production of cotton and cotton textiles. Some events, such as the industrial revolution and the American Civil War, caused to draw the interest of British Empire to the region. British Empire took initiatives to expand the area of cotton production by taking advantage of the circumstances that Ottoman Empire was in. Located on the plain of Menderes, Nazilli was an important Centre for the cultivation of cotton. In the last period of the Ottoman Empire, there were efforts to improve fertility and increase the production of cotton through the initiatives of foreign countries. On the other hand, in the period of Turkish Republic, significant efforts were made to improve the cultivation of cotton through Turkish State itself. This process had continued in a planned way in the earliest years of the Republic. This study mainly attempts to evaluate the efforts made to improve the yield and quality of cotton production until the 1940s in Nazilli region.
