Abstract

Pro-change protests, happened in most of Arab countries, named “the Arab Spring”, and free and fair elections in Yemen for democracy and freedom have increased expectations for making progress of women’s rights in Yemen in addition to political rights and civil liberties. However, rather than improvement, it could be seen that women’s rights and living conditions in Yemen, compared before and after the Arab Spring, have been gradually deteriorated. Women in Yemen had an important role in building future of the country during the Arab Spring, and also showed their will to maintain their roles for the future. However, Yemen Women who vigorously supported protests aiming to bring political freedom and civil liberties to their countries have been excluded from politics and public sphere, and also have lost their previous rights under autocratic regimes. In this framework, primarily evaluating women’s living conditions and status, and rights women had or not before the Arab Spring, the study will elaborate the fundamental reasons why women joined protests in 2011. Afterwards, the paper tries to analyze the current status of Yemeni women and the degree of success in realization of demands raised out of those reasons.
