TWITTER USAGE OF NATIONAL AND LOCAL NEWSPAPERS IN TURKEY

Abstract

Social media has been an important outlet for national and local newspapers. Social media have advantages in terms of reaching wider audience and sharing comments about news. Being a digital platform make social media suitable for newspapers to disseminate their news. Today readers have reached at more news and more detailed information about the content of news owing to social media. It has changed journalism in regards to the way journalists are able to gain access to news sources, how journalists present news content to readers and the degree and ease of communication between readers and journalists. Being one of the most important forms of public communication, it has considerable inherent potential to make the production and distribution of news and information more democratic, participatory and pluralistic. In this study, primarily the effectiveness of the social media as a news environment, the usage of social media by the national and local newspaper institutions and the role of social media in the future of journalism has been analyzed. In the study a content analysis has been carried out in order to determine the Twitter usage habits of the national and local newspaper institutions in Turkey in transferring news to their followers. For his purpose the Twitter usage of the leading 8 national newspapers in Turkey and 5 local newspapers in Eskişehir has been analyzed. Besides, the tweets and followers of the Twitter accounts that belong these national and local newspapers has been studied on yearly basis. According to the results of the analysis, the local newspapers especially transfer news about the city that they are operating in and they do not use Twitter for news media as effectively as national newspapers.
