A STUDY ON POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE PERFECTIONISM AND SELF-ESTEEM LEVELS OF MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS

Abstract

Theoretical knowledge and studies show that the sense of positive and negative perfectionism and self-esteem have significant effects on one’s personality characteristics and academic achievements. It is believed that there is sufficient number of studies involving middle school students in order to determine and compare the positive and negative perfectionism and self-esteemlevels. Therefore, the purpose of the present study is to determine and compare the positive and negative perfectionism and self-esteemlevels of middle school students. We sought answers to the following questions with this purpose in mind. 1. What are the positive and negative perfectionism and self-esteemlevels of middle school students? Is there any correlation between them? 2. Do the positive and negative perfectionism levels of middle school students significantly predict their self-esteem? 3. Are there any gender-based differences between perfectionism and self-esteem levels of middle school students? Relational screening model is used in the study, and random selected 868 students studying at a middle school in Sivas in the academic year of 2015-2016 are included. “Positive and Negative Perfectionism Scale” and “Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory” are used for data collection. The collected data are analyzed using Pearson Product-Moment Correlation coefficient, simple linear regression analysis, and T-Test. In such analysis, we’ve concluded that 38,01% of the students have low self-esteem level, 61,99% have high self-esteem level, that there is a positive and poor correlation between positive perfectionism and self-esteem, and there is a negative and moderate correlation between negative perfectionism and self-esteem, that the positive perfectionism levels significantly predict the self-esteem level, and that there is not a significant different between genders.
