The aim of the social work profession is to improve the well-being of countries and communities in general; In this respect, social work education is the training of the professionals required for the implementation of social welfare services. In line with this goal, social work education, which first started in the United Kingdom and the United States, has spread to different countries in the first half of the 20th century and has become a universal. The first social work education institution in Turkey was opened in Ankara in 1961 under the name of Social Services Academy. In establishing this Academy, the influence and support of the United Nations, which was established after the Second World War, was significant. Later, in 1963, the Department of Social Work was opened under the direction of Hacettepe University. This was the second important step taken for social work education in Turkey. However, this department was closed after the military coup in 1980. The academicians and students in the department were also transferred and placed in the Social Services Academy. Thus, two different structures providing social work education in Turkey were combined under the name of the School of Social Services, which will operate under Hacettepe University. This School was the only unit in Turkey to provide social work education until the beginning of the year 2000. For the first time in 2002, one social work department was opened in another university. In the later period, especially in 2006 and afterwards, there has been a turn which can be expressed as “madness of department opening ". At the end of this process, as of 2016, more than 40 universities in Turkey have been given social work education. However, of course, it is inevitable that there are many problems such as quality, competence and supervision especially in the departments opened in such short time! In this study, the process briefly mentioned above will be discussed in more detail and the history of social work education in Turkey will be tried to be presented.
