RELATED FACTORS AND RESULTS OF SHOPPING ADDICTION: A STUDY IN KIRIKKALE

Abstract

It is recently accepted that assessing addiction only with use of alcohol, cigarette or harmful substances is a wrong approach. Internet addicition, game addiction, shopping addiction are being debated as types of behavioral addiction that people are tried to control and which cause negative outcomes. At this point, shopping addiction is expressed as an important problem related with public administrators, businesses, consumers and society. In this study, which examines the factors related to shopping addiction, primary data are colledted, analyzed and the results are interpreted through a survey study conducted in Kirikkale province after reviewing related literature. Althouth the problem of shopping addiction is examined extensively and detailly in foreign literature, it seems that there is not enough field study about the problem in local literature. In this context at this study, addiction, shopping addiction as a kind of addiciton, reasons, results and measurement methods of shopping addiction are examined at the theoretical level first. Then, factors which are related with shopping addiction and negative results depend upon shopping addiction are investigated, by initial data which is collected by the specified measurement tools. As a result of research, factors which are related with shopping addiction is pointed out as; gender, age, credit card ownership, conspicuous consumption, jeolousy, ad satisfaction, brand change behavior and materialism. Moreover, it has been determined that negative emotions after purchasing, not using behavior of product and hiding behavior of product increases as shopping addiction increases. Finally, research findings are interpreted, suggestion for decision maker are developed and method of the research is evaluated.
