COMPARATIVELY INVESTIGATION OF PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING, RESILIENCE AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS IN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS ATTENDING GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING PROGRAM

Abstract

Since counseling is a profession that involves interpersonal relationship between counselor and client, counselors need to have certain personal qualities. Personal qualities of effective counselors include psychological health, personal awareness, mindfulness, trustworthiness, competence, open-mindedness and interpersonal communication skills and so on. The aim of this study was to comparatively investigate psychological well-being, resilience and communication skills of undergraduate students who attend guidance and counseling program and different programs. The participants consisted of 299 (204 girls and 95 boys) undergraduate students who attend third year and fourth year. In study Psychological Well-Being Scale, Resilience Scale and Communication Skills Scale were used to collect data. The data were analyzed by independent samples t-test analysis. Results revealed that there are significant differences between the average psychological well-being scores, resilience scores and communication skills scores of guidance and counseling students and those students who attend different programs. Guidance and counseling students scored significantly higher than those students who attend different programs on psychological well-being and resilience total scores. Similarly, guidance and counseling students scored significantly higher than the other students on communication skills total scores and sucscale scores. Findings were discussed in terms of counselor training literature. In the light of research findings, recommendations were presented to practitioners and researchers.
