Meaning “Science of place names” in Turkish, “toponymy”, a subdivision of onomastics, aims at studying proper names of places by certain methods. Toponymy studies are significant in terms of showing the wealth of the languages. Some words that are not used in Turkish today or exist in only some dialects can be found in names of the places. The fact that the names of the settlement units are changing necessitates that these names which are forgotten locally must be identified and taken into consideration in this area before it is too late. Besides, place names have a great significance in terms of national culture. It is a well-known fact that place names have great traces from the memories of the societies. In our study, the names of the places withing Giresun province have been examined. The names of the streets, neighbourhood, counties and villages have been taken into consideration from a lexical-semantic point of view and the structure and origins of these names have been classified.},author={Feridun TEKİN-- Samet Cantürk},year={2017},journal={The Journal of Academic Social Science Studies}}
