Abstract

Slow city (cittaslow) movement, which started in Italy as a protest to the standardizing effect of the globalization on cities, became widespread rapidly and became an international union. Today there are 236 members in 30 countries around the world. Turkey, is one of the countries involved in this union in 2009 with Seferihisar, has 14 members by year 2017. Being a member of the International Slow Cities Union requires having and maintaining many criteria. The acquisition of the slow city title marks a beginning rather than a consequence. The factor for sustainability of the title is is the success of local governments that is as important as the maintenance of the criteria. By taking into consideration that the union is a coalition of local governments, the importance of this factor is easily understood. In this case, for example, after the acquisition of the title, the change of the local management in the local elections whether it will be effective in the sustainability of the title will be an important issue. The purpose of the study is to investigate how the Mayor's change in the March 2014 local elections affected the sustainability of the title after acquisition of slow city title in Yenipazar in 2011. The reason for the selection of Yenipazar as a research area is it’s a suitable example for the purpose of the research because the mayor has changed in the local elections after winning the slow city title. As the research method, interview method was used which is one of the most common data collection methods used in qualitative researches. In Yenipazar, interviews were held with the directors of various institutions (municipality, district governorship and non-governmental organizations).
