Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine metaphorically the attitudes of prospective class teacher candidates’ towards music teaching. The study was carried out with 130 students studying in the Mersin University Faculty of Education in the 2017-2018 academic year. Phenomenological design, one of qualitative study methods, was used in the study. The data were collected through the form of determining the attitudes of prospective class teacher candidates’ towards music teaching in which there was the expression “The music teaching is as …………….; because ……………..”. With this form it was aimed to determine the metaphorical definitions which the prospective participants made related to the music teaching and the common features of these metaphorical definitions. The data were categorized using the content analysis and frequency analysis technique. The main purpose of content analysis is to reach the concepts and relationships that can explain the obtained data. The data obtained for this reason must first be conceptualized, then it must be arranged in a logical way according to the emerging concepts, and the themes describing the data should be determined accordingly. The categories were evaluated under 3 categories which were named positive attitude, negative attitude and ambivalence which was involving both positive and negative statements. The results of the study indicated that 99 of the metaphorical definitions, which showed the attitudes of the prospective participants towards the music activities, fell into the positive category while 21 of them fell into the negative category. In addition 10 of the metaphorical definitions were found to be ambivalent. In light of the obtained data, it can be concluded that the majority of the prospective participants attitudes towards the music teaching were positive according to the metaphorical definitions they made. In the direction of the results obtained without working, it is important that participants who have negative attitudes towards music teaching and ambivalence attitudes are investigated to have this attitude and their attitudes should be transformed into positive attitudes.
