Abstract

The question of how art education will be carried out in line with various purposes and principles, in other words, how it will be taught also shows the problem of method in art education. The solution of this problem of method can be obtained by describing the visual elements of a design, an object or a subject, by carrying out specific disciplines and by applying the specified methods on students. Art education in primary education is a process which aims children to be creative, free, innovative and happy. In art education, the process children go through has a great contribution on students’ mental development, character and physical and social development. During this process, contributions are made to students’ recognizing materials, learning and developing techniques, thinking through trial and error, and developing questioning skills and creativity. Each of the sub-branches of art in primary art education requires different expertise and technical skill. Teaching of each art branch and using the areas in parallel disciplines together should keep in pace with the changing and developing age and be adapted to situations suitable for students. One of the most important purposes of art education is to teach to see and touch. It is the first condition to perceive and to form the environment properly. The first stage of creativity is not only looking but “seeing” and not only touching with hands but “feeling what is touched”. It is thought that clay, which is an alternative material in art education, will positively develop the child’s senses of seeing and touching in addition to the skills of three dimensional thinking and brain development in parallel with hand skills. The purpose of this study is to help primary education students receiving art education to develop skills of thinking differently, expressing themselves correctly, developing methods and using sensory organs by using clay and turning the character visual they apply on two dimensional grounds into three dimensional structures. Since the products resulting from the application were assessed, qualitative research method was used. In qualitative researches, data collection methods such as observation, interview and document analysis are used and a process is followed in which perceptions and events are presented in a realistic and integrated way in their natural setting.
