THE VALUE OF TEACHER CANDIDATES AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ACADEMIC SELF-EFFICACY BELIEFS

Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the effect of the values of pre-service teachers on academic self-efficacy beliefs and whether the relationship between the values of pre-service teachers and academic self-efficacy beliefs differed by gender. This research was carried out with the candidate of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics department who took pedagogical formation education in Necmettin Erbakan University in 2015-2016 academic year. There are a total of 410 students including 257 female and 153 male students. This research is a kind of reletional screening. The data of the study were obtained by using “the Values Scale” developed by Dilmaç, Arıcak & Cesur and ur Academic Self-Efficacy Scale adapted by Yılmaz, Gürçay & Ekici in Turkish. The data were analyzed by using Pearson correlation coefficient, multiple regression and independent sample t-test in SPSS 20 program. The results of the study show that there is a significant relationship between the academic self-efficacy beliefs of teacher candidates and the sub-dimensions of career and materialism of the values scale. The mean scores of social, career, intellectual and spiritual sub-dimensions of female teacher candidates were found to be significantly higher than the values of male pre-service teachers. There is no significant difference between the academic self-efficacy belief scores of female teacher candidates and the academic self-efficacy belief scores of male pre-service teachers
